The American Kestrel is in decline throughout its range. This situation is quite common for cavity nesting birds. They nest in either natural cavities or those created by woodpeckers. In the case of the Kestrel, they have often used holes created by flickers. Unfortunately, cutting of dead trees, decline of forests, and other environmental changes means that nesting cavities are in short supply. We can help, by the simple expedient of putting up nest boxes for these birds. The decline in Kestrel numbers is everywhere, but especially bad in some areas. In the Southeast, their numbers are down about 85%, for example. The Kestrel is the smallest falcon and has beautiful colors. Unlike the other falcons, it doesn’t eat mainly birds, preferring to take its prey on the ground, such as grasshoppers, mice, and, where found, lizards. They don’t mind being around humans, and will often nest in city backyards. On our five-acre property we have installed three Kestrel boxes, and all three are used most years. Our boxes are made in our own small shop. We use American grown incense cedar. This sustainably harvested wood is very resistant to rot and insects, and will last for many years. We use 5.5” boards and join them edge to edge using Titebond III waterproof glue (American made) and biscuits for a permanent joint. By doing this we create boards which are much more resistant to warping and are also stronger. We assemble with the same American-made glue and screws coated to resist even salt water corrosion. Our boxes are beautiful, and they will last for a very long time. They come to you unfinished, and no finish is necessary. They will gradually weather to a beautiful silvery-grey color. If you desire, it is OK to paint or stain the outside of the box, but the inside should be left unfinished. One side of the box is made to hinge upward so it can be cleaned. Kestrels don’t build nests, so the box should have a layer of wood shavings mixed with a little soil. We include a bag of wood shavings, and you can use a little of your own local soil. We also include quality screws for mounting and complete instructions. This is your opportunity to provide a nesting site for a beautiful little raptor. You will enjoy seeing them come and go from the box, and the same pair is likely to return year after year. Depending upon where you live, they may be resident year around. |
